This page is the hub for my Juniper Service Provider study notes and videos as I work toward the JNCIE-SP certification!

I’ll do my best to publish topic-focused deep dives as I study them. Posts and videos will land when a subject is fresh in the lab and as I’ll structure it very similar to Juniper’s self study bundle, starting with system configuration, then IGP’s, BGP, MPLS, L3/L2 VPNs, RSVP-TE, CoS etc

What to expect in each post

  • Straight to the point companion blog posts & videos to reinforce key topics, how it shows up in real networks, and how it fits into the JNCIE study course
  • The lab topology and setup I’m using with vMX routers in GNS3 (or EVE-NG if I switch to it!)
  • Minimal and simplified configuration snippets, this is a tool that I use myself as documentation to reference in the future
  • Troubleshooting and verification commands so you can confirm the configuration works or be able debug / troubleshoot the issue if it’s not

Are Certifications Still Worth It?

This is honestly a question that I’ve asked myself many times, and I’ve also faced critics when mentioning higher-level certifications at work. In a world where automation, DevOps, and AI dominate headlines, it’s fair to wonder if certifications are still relevant. Personally, I think they’re still extremely valuable, when pursued with purpose (not just to add a badge on LinkedIn!).

Certifications help structure your learning, expose you to technologies you might not use on a daily basis, and give you a framework for troubleshooting under pressure. For me, this isn’t about chasing a trend. It’s about growing as an engineer and diving deeper into protocols like BGP, RSVP-TE, and L3/L2 MPLS VPNs.

Why Juniper (and not Cisco or another vendor)?

I started with the CCNA and later took CCNP courses through a Cisco Academy. (And before that super boring Microsoft exams, but that’s a story for another day)

While Cisco remains a leader in the market and I think the CCNA is a fantastic entry point, I’ve chosen Juniper for a few reasons:

  • Open Learning: free training plus up to 75% off certification vouchers, even for advanced exams.
  • Standards-based Junos: built on IETF / RFC standards, the protocols you learn on Juniper will be applicable beyond one vendor.
  • Consistency: Junos is clean, modular, and predictable across platforms, you’re not going to need to learn a different OS or management software to work on EX/QFX switches, SRX firewalls, or MX series routers
  • SP and multi-vendor relevance: For anyone working in service provider environments or multi-vendor networks, I believe Juniper is still an excellent investment in your skill set.
